We are a family run farm situated in mid Bedfordshire. We rear free range pigs and sell eggs laid by our free range chicken
f lock. We also produce the well known Kelly Bronze Turkeys for Christmas and have the Breakheart herd of pedigree Dexter cattle. The welfare of our animals is of upmost importance to us and so is producing superb quality produce that
is both fresh and local. When you buy from us you are guaranteed that our animals have lived happy and fulfilled lives
(we are regularly monitored by RSPCA Freedom Foods). The taste of our produce is second to none.
Until recently, the main focus of the farm has been to produce Free Range top quality pork. We use a Landrace X Duroc sow
as this animal is ideal for outdoor conditions and has excellent mothering ability. The sows are crossed with a Large White
boar to produce succulent pork that has minimal fat but is full of flavour. We can provide our customers with a wide variety of
differently flavoured sausages, dry cured bacon, gammon joints as well as all the usual pork joints.
In 2002 the business began to diversify a little and we started to rear the famous Kelly Bronze Turkeys for direct sale to the public
at Christmas. The turkeys are grown to maturity, free range, over several months and fed on locally grown cereals and
vegetable protein – without additives, drugs or growth promoters. The birds are dispatched on the farm to reduce stress
and after being prepared by hand are hung in a chilled maturation chamber for at least ten days to develop even more flavour.
A Free Range chicken flock was added to the farm in 2008. 12 hectares of land was put down to permanent pasture for
the 12,000 bird laying flock to range over. We use the traditional Lohman Brown hens which have access to the pasture
from 8 am until dusk seven days a week but are shut in at night to protect them from foxes.
With the farm now having 12 hectares of permanent pasture the Breakheart herd of pedigree Dexter cattle was introduced to graze over the chicken range. The Dexter breed is ideally suited for this job as their small size ensures that they do not poach the
ground in the winter months, but have the advantage of producing excellent quality beef. We will be selling packs of well
matured beef in the near future. |
